Temperature dependence of the relationship between pCO(2) and dissolved organic carbon in lakes

چکیده
The relationship between the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in Brazilian lakes, encompassing 225 samples across a wide latitudinal range in the tropics, was tested. Unlike the positive relationship reported for lake waters, which was largely based on temperate lakes, we found no significant relationship for low-latitude lakes (< 33), despite very broad ranges in both pCO2 and DOC levels. These results suggest substantial differences in the carbon cycling of lowlatitude lakes, which must be considered when upscaling limnetic carbon cycling to global scales.

A high resolution study of surface layer hydrographic and biogeochemical properties between Chesapeake Bay and Bermuda
Surface hydrographic and biogeochemical properties were measured contemporaneously at high spatial density during a w x transit from Chesapeake Bay, across the Middle Atlantic Bight MAB and Gulf Stream to the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda w x from 28 September–2 October 1996. Discrete samples were collected for total organic carbon TOC , dissolved organic w x w x w x w x carbon DOC , total organic ...
متن کاملAssessing factors underlying variation of CO2 emissions in boreal lakes vs. reservoirs.
Reservoirs and lakes were compared to test the hypothesis that they are similar with respect to factors driving the variation in CO(2) emissions to the atmosphere. Understanding this variation is necessary for the assessment of the contribution of these freshwater ecosystems to the global carbon cycle. This study, in contrast to previous ones, included analyses of the relationships between CO(...
متن کاملTemperature Dependence of Photodegradation of Dissolved Organic Matter to Dissolved Inorganic Carbon and Particulate Organic Carbon
Photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) has been studied for more than two decades. Usually, laboratory or "in-situ" experiments are used to determine photodegradation variables. A common problem with these experiments is that the photodegradation experiments are done at higher than ambient temperature. Five laboratory experiments were done to determine the effect of temp...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal drivers of dissolved organic matter in high alpine lakes: Role of Saharan dust inputs and bacterial activity.
The effects of many environmental stressors such as UV radiation are mediated by dissolved organic matter (DOM) properties. Therefore, determining the factors shaping spatial and temporal patterns is particularly essential in the most susceptible, low dissolved organic carbon (DOC) lakes. We analyzed spatiotemporal variations in dissolved organic carbon concentration and dissolved organic matte...
متن کاملCarbon dioxide emissions from estuaries of northern and northeastern Brazil
The carbon dioxide flux through the air-water interface of coastal estuarine systems must be quantified to understand the regional balance of carbon and its transport through adjacent coastal regions. We estimated and calculated the emissions of carbon dioxide (FCO₂) and the partial pressure of CO₂ (pCO₂) values in 28 estuarine environments at a variety of spatial scales in the northern and nor...
